This special edition Beyond the Basin podcast contains two readings from the novel and features original music composed on the wooden flute, Peruvian Quena and Sansula.

Synopsis:

In a shallow basin of water, separated from a vast ocean by a narrow isthmus, two children play secretly. Behind them lies a dense rainforest, within which two communities wait divided. One is an undiscovered shamanic tribe deep in the forest, the other a Franciscan mission. Both children were born into the tribe, but only one has stayed.

Half-way across the world, a young journalist follows them in his dreams, waking up each morning with no recollection of what he has seen. In his waking life, he begins to feel the tug of an unfamiliar and alien emotion, something telling him to leave his life and seek something else.

Beyond the Basin is an exploration of the beauty and complexity of the psychedelic experience. Exploring the social, metaphysical and spiritual implications of humanity's communion with medicinal plants, it seeks to unravel some of the mystery around these amazing substances.

Beyond the Basin will also be the MAPS 'Gift of the Month' in July, which is sent out free to donators. Any listeners, especially in the US, can also get the novel by donating and in doing so aid future psychedelic research. See Maps.org for more details.

On the third and final dopecast from this 2009's extraordinary DopeStock extravaganza in the Capital City of Cannabis, the Web's Favourite Cannabis Commentator, the Dopefiend, opens up the festivities in the basement of Amsterdam's most comfortable coffeeshop, the Dolphins, for the DopeStock Evening Session. To kick things off, the Dopefiend chats to Dopetribe mainstay G13 about his ingenious technique for getting Son of Gonzo to buy him drinks in exchange for rolling joints, and which strains are looking popular for the DopeStock cup, then seeks Bushmiller's opinion about the setting for the Evening Session, the Verdamper vaporizers installed at the Dolphins, then talks to Son of Gonzo himself, and Dr. Dank about his experience of Amsterdam as a regular visitor, which vaporizer he prefers out of his iolite and Volcano, and how the Volcano enabled him to cut out smoking altogether and whether he misses the ritual of rolling joints. Moving over to Pothead and Shockrocket's table, the Dopefiend chats with the guys about their level of stonedness, how the votes are tallying up for the DopeStock Cup and why Pothead doesn't smoke anymore, then the Dopefiend talks to DopeTribe newcomer Noah who's rushed down to the Dolphins following a hard day's studying for the Evening Session about his opinion of the iolite compared to his trusty Volcano, then asks all three for their opinion of whether Peresident Barack Obama is a good president for Cannabis Users. Pothead having cleared a blockage in the iolite, the Dopefiend loads it with some White Dolphin, while Pothead talks about the strange spectacle of iolite users sucking up ground buds into the iolite herb chamber, then Noah gives his opinion of the flavour and the strength of the iolite hit. Heading over to where Ostritt's gearing up for the joint rolling competition, the Dopefiend eavesdrops on his plans for a winning joint, then talks to him about the poetry competition he's holding at the Evening Session, and the book that he's giving away as the prize, his own creation, Beyond The Basin, and whether his own Cannabis use mirrors that of his protagonist in terms of spiritual and recreational use, before the whole table chimes in on the subject of watching TV when stoned, and then the Dopefiend and Ostritt manage to convince poetry competition entrant Crowley's Wife to read her entry. Next up the Dopefiend talks to Dopestock veteran Jonny B who gives his expert view of this year's DopeStock, and also chats to HudsonRulez, Dr. Dank and the Herodians about their thoughts on Amsterdam and their votes for the DopeStock Cup. Following a musical interlude, the Dopefiend opens the 2009 DopeStock joint rolling competition with judges Herodian and Dr. Dank casting their view over the handiwork of Herodian, Ostritt, a controversial submission from G13, Blazing Glory and DanSon who submitted a "joint" entry under the name "Team Glass Onion", some absurdity from Billy G and Will, and a final entry from Jonny B, before the judges make their final decision on the winning and running up submissions. Joint rolling completed, the Dopefiend and HudsonRulez open the voting for the DopeStock Cup, passing the two finalists round in joint form and iolite form and getting opinions from Pothead, Shockrocket, Noah, Komrade, G13, DutchBoy, Mullet and Billy G, before tallying the final votes and announcing the winner of this year's DopeStock Cup, with yet more controversy surrounding a miserable G13. Finishing the evening's festivities, we hear the remaining entries for the Poetry competition with words from HudsonRulez, Son of Gonzo and Bushmiller and Ostritt announces the winners of 2 copies of Beyond The Basin. On the second of our three live Dopecasts from 2009's massive Dopestock celebrations from the Capital City of Cannabis, the Web's Favourite Cannabis Commentator, the Dopefiend, gets the party started at the Cannabis College by hitting the Volcano vaporizer with the Herodians, Shockrocket and Max Freakout who've got some Silver Bubble on the go while talking about their choices for the Dopestock Cup, including some talk of the elusive and mysterious White Cheese which is still the strain everyone's talking about. Next the Dopefiend turns his attention to Mrs Herodian who gives her opinion on why the DopeTribe is so male-dominated, and what her highlights of this year's DopeStock celebrations have been, before Herodian talks about how proper use of vaporizers can lessen the impact of the current financial pressures on stoners, and how the Cannabis market in Amsterdam compares to that in Britain, and how a legalized market might work in the United Kingdom. Hitting a touch of White Russian, the Dopefiend moves over to chat with The Grow Report's Vapor Mod HudsonRulez and DopeTribe elder Komrade about the growth in the Vaporizer scene in Amsterdam, how it compares to Canada, and the similarities and differences between the two nations' smoking laws, then he seeks the pair's opinion concerning US President Barack Obama and whether his administration is more stoner-friendly than those previous, the worrying situation in Mexico, arming the homeless, the medical marijuana movement, and whether there's any hope for the legalization movement in the United States. Next up, the Dopefiend hits the Cannabis College garden with G13, Pothead, Billy G and Danson for a tour of the beautiful plants on display there and a chat about life working at the Cannabis College and what sort of work they do there, and the state of the Cannabis scene in Amsterdam and how it's suffering at the hands of the current Dutch government and their opposition to the leniency of cannabis law. After a brief sojourn to the open air to enjoy a bit of improvised musical entertainment in the sunshine from Son of Gonzo and Ostritt, the Dopefiend heads back into the Cannabis College to observe the construction of a giga-joint for 4/20, which is being hastily packed together by a crew of crack cannabis connoiseurs, while a 3 metre monster Volcano bag is also prepared for our 4.20 celebrations, in tandem with a warm-up 3 metre bag of LSD weed vapes which is enjoyed by the likes of Blazing Glory and Stoney, but not Jono420, who explains why he's not a fan of the LSD and which strains he has enjoyed, as well as a chat about the smoking ban and the mushroom ban in Holland and how they've affected the Amsterdam scene. Next the Dopefiend talks to Stoney about the legend of the White Cheese and the assorted exhibits on display at the Cannabis College, before heading over to have a word with official Dopestock greeter G13, who's a fan of the LSD, but became a White Cheese convert on the Canal Cruise and is firmly pushing for it to win the DopeStock Cup. Next, the Dopefiend talks to Squidgy Sid who's making tea and constructing a joint with some fresh tasty hash, and also gives his opinion of the White Cheese, and explains why he finds it difficult to stop smoking joints, even with the advances in the Vaporizer world of late. Next the Dopefiend turns his attention to Jay_K and Flick, who give their thoughts on the various strains on offer, before a quick chat with veteran Dopestocker Jonny B who's enjoying the effects of a 9-strain salad, then he heads back towards the Volcano, where Max Freakout is filling one of our monster party bags with Amnesia Haze vapour, and the pair talk about how Max is coping with a neverending supply of Cannabis, the prospects for Psychonautica's and the Dopefiend.co.uk network's future, Max's reaction to the increasing government sanctions on Amsterdam's unique culture, and his views on Druidude's recent Dopestock interview with Eddie Stratton, whether there's any hope for legalization, and whether it really matters anyway, and also about a recent newspaper exposÃ involving the British government's drug propaganda wing, "Frank" actually telling the truth! Following a round-up of the moves towards decriminalization across the US, and a shout out for the many dopetribe members who have signed their name in memory of a late member of the cannabis community, the Dopefiend hits the emails, starting with a couple on the subject of how excessive cannabis use can do more harm than good, how maintaining the balance between your use of various plant and chemical allies and your everyday life is important, and why the plant itself is never to blame for such ill effects, why vaporizer uses almost always abandon their previous love of smoking once they become accustomed to the cleaner high and fresher flavours of vape, and whether you can really get a satisfying body hogh using vaporizers like the Volcano. Heading into the VaporLounge, the Dopefiend samples a tasty touch of Grapefruit Diesel in his Volcano while talking about the ever-nearing Dopestock festivities hitting Amsterdam on April 20th, tells some happy news concerning friend of the Dopecast and head honcho of the Cannabis College Lorna Clay, gives the final details of our Cannabis Canal Cruise organized by DopeTribe newcomer DutchBoy, then hits an email from this week's contributing musician Lovecraft23 about the battle between truth and propaganda on the front line of the decriminalization movement. Following a musical interlude, the Dopefiend talks briefly about the name change of the I-Inhale to "iolite", whether cannabis or entheogen use can worsen clinical depression, and what can be done to counter it and the pleasures of toking before or even during a movie. In this week's Cannabis News, the sports columnist busted for home growing because he bought items from High Times advertisers, Canada's "Prince of Pot" claims the Canadian government are running him out of town in preparation for the Olympics, authorities suspect a massive Canada-US smuggling operation employing helicopters to carry cannabis and other drugs across the border, Massachussets clamps down on stoners taking advantage of their recent decriminalization of small amounts of Cannabis by smoking in public, and a British teacher takes on the Cannabis laws in the High Court. This Week on the Web's Favourite Cannabis Podcast, the Dopefiend talks about the International Drugs Control Board's publication of their annual report on the international drug situation, which threw up some interesting statistics on the rise in Cannabis use among teenager in Britain, the plummetting price of Cocaine, the new trend in internet-based drug dealing, the return of Afghan herb to the market, the failure of the War on Colombian Cocaine, and the widely ignored but telling news that prescription drug abuse now outweighs use of Cocaine, Heroin, Hallucinogens, Ecstasy and inhalants. Turning to some feedback on the last couple of Dopecasts, the Dopefiend addresses the subjects of how to break into the Medical Marijuana Industry in the USA, Cannabis and Creativity, removing the early Dopecasts from circulation, more support for the I-Inhale and Professor David Nutt, some background info on the ACMD itself and how its members are appointed, and cheer at the return of Queerninja. Heading into the VaporLounge to conduct some careful examination of a morsel of street skunk, a chat about the preparations for this year's DopeStock in Amsterdam, and a perusal of an article from AlterNet about the five most over-rated legal highs. After a quick voicemail from Scott, the Dopefiend addresses a bumper pack of Cannabis News, starting with a report on last week's Latin America Commission on Drugs and Democracy, followed by news of fierce protests in Mexico following the deployment of the army to fight drug traffickers, 2 pot-growing firefighters are charged in one day with felony Cannabis production, publicity-hungry sheriff Leon Lott drops his case against bong-ripping olympian Michael Phelps, Americans for Safe Access put the pressure on the Obama Administration to stop persecuting landlords of cannabis dispensary buildings and also launch a suit against the DMV for singling out medical marijuana patients, the glimmer of hope in Barack Obama's appointment of the Seattle Police Chief as the new Drug Czar, and the British Cannabis convict who's electronic tag was fitted to his detachable false leg! On the Web's Favourite Cannabis Podcast this week, the Dopefiend talks about the looming global recession and how the mighty panacaea Cannabis could be used to cure the planet's financial ills, especially following this week's announcement by the UN's drugs watchdog that only "drug money" could now protect some major banks, and how the ever-buoyant spending of stoners never buckles to the whims of the money markets. Hitting the emails, we hear from long-time listener MattyTHC, who gives praise for the recent Christmas Day dopecast, and tells why this Christmas was his best ever, including some talk of how easy it is to make friends in Amsterdam, especially at Dopestock! Matty also talks about the friendliness of the DopeTribe, leading to a brief chat about why our forum is so much more welcoming than many others. On this week's episode of the Web's Favourite Cannabis Podcast, the Dopefiend marks today's reclassification of Cannabis in the UK to a Class B drug, meaning the return of 5-year prison sentences for users, and describes the many levels of confusion and con-artistry surrounding the British Government's flip-flopping on Cannabis, and why the news is both bad and good for the average stoner. Hitting the emails, we hear two contrasting Salvia trip-reports from Doperider and her husband, highlighting the importance of set and setting, and having an experienced, calm sitter, then as DopeRider has some questions about the Volcano, the Dopefiend sashays elegantly into the VaporLounge for a taste of some extremely fruity Sour Queen and a chat about the different Valve systems available for the Volcano and how it compares to the I-Inhale, as well as a mention for Dopestock, coming up in Amsterdam this April, before taking a trippy musical break courtesy of Zol. On the first Dopecast since the Dopefiend's Christmas break, the Web's Favourite Cannabis Commentator talks about the enduring myth that today's Cannabis is far more potent than that smoked by the Hippie Generation, what may have caused such an increase, if it is even present, and compares two contrasting studies from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean into the potency of our sacrament. Next, the Dopefiend sends a special thanks out to the Chieftain of Chill and the many contributors to DopeTribe Dispatches who manned the fort during the holiday season, before hitting the emails, starting with one which tracks the evolution of the Dopecast before asking for more details on the revolutionary I-Inhale Portable Vaporizer. Hopping over onto the wireless, the Dopefiend demonstrates the beauty of portable vaporization by I-Inhaling some tasty Jack Herer from his vault while alerting the DopeTribe to the crusade of Pinky Starr, co-ordinator of this month's Legalization Protest in London, and also mentioning the new alternative forum for stranded members of the Everyone Does It forum, then addresses a particular listener's concerns about the Dopefiend's choice of music on the Dopecast, before disregarding them entirely and taking a hip-hoppin musical interlude.
