In this fortnight's installment of Psychonautica, Max Freakout
plays a talk from the world psychedelic forum, by Allyson and Alex
Grey, entitled 'psychedelic families, what do we tell the
children?'. The Greys talk about children and entheogens, the
american ideal 'happy family', the Osborne family, the problems of
modern drug education and its mischaracterization of drugs and
failure to distinguish use from abuse, the 'drugs are bad'
mentality, the 'harm reduction' and 'reality based' approaches to
drug education, the importance of listening to children,
distinction between addictive drugs such as methamphetamine and
non-addictive drugs, Western condemnation of psychedelic drugs,
lack of a sacred context for entheogen use, ayahuasca rituals, the
UDV, Bwiti Iboga ceremonies, entheogen initiations as a rite of
passage, Huichol Peyote use, Alex and Allyson's own experiences
bringing up their daughter Zena, taking time without taking any
drugs - the 'altered state of sobriety', Terence Mckenna's
recommendation to only have one child, taking drugs around children
and comparisons of modern drug users to ancient Christians.
Afterwards, Max Freakout reads out an email from Shroomatic about
her experiences as an entheogen-using mother. Email
maxfreakout@dopefiend.co.uk, and hang out with the community of
friendly psychonauts at www.thegrowreport.com.
